Designer Richard Konold has fallen for the magic of the circus ring. He presents a blue and white Teddy bear dressed as a circus clown, with enormous shoes, a red nose, a large stomach, a pointed clown´s hat with pompoms, large made-up eyes, red cheeks and a wide grin.
Several designs were produced before the designer got the combination of bear and clown just right. Now, along with the hat with pompoms, the bear is wearing a white shirt with red "buttons" and blue trousers that stretch across his large stomach. Richard Konold was inspired to create this imaginative personification of his dreams by the famous Monaco Circus Festival which he saw on television.

Teddy bear dancing partners from the dancing bear family. The grandparents of this delightful couple were born in 1925 and are still dancing in the Puppenhausmuseum in Basle today. Both Teddy bears have hand-stitched noses. Steiff Mohair elephant 1909 (Reference #401411)
A little elephant pictured in a "Modenwelt" fashion magazine in December 1879 inspired Margarete Steiff to make her very first toy. In 1880, she created a little elephant "Elefäntle" out of felt and gave it to Anna Steiff, her sister-in-law. Ever since, the elephant has been the symbol accompanying the 125-year history of Margarete Steiff GmbH.
A very special one was developed in 1909 and soon found many friends, with its unusual design and red and blue colouring that was certainly avant-garde for the time. It was made of felt until 1917 and of mohair until as late as 1927.
This exceptional red-mohair replica features an attractive shape and is hand-stuffed with fine wood shavings like the original - even the tusks! With its little eyes, which are glass beads mounted by hand, the little elephant looks artfully at the rest of the world.

In 1895, English authoress Florence Upton published a series of books on the tales of one very special "Character doll" the Golly. The wonderful tales and adventures of Golly received huge popularity. Inspired by this magical character, Steiff produced their first Golly in 1908, the earliest known Golly to be commercially manufactured. In true traditional style, Steiff captured the magic from the tales and transformed the character into a much-loved child's toy.

One in particular was "...very pretty and a most fearful pickle" and inspired Beatrix Potter to write a delightful tale of their adventures. In 1907, The Tale of Tom Kitten was published, and Beatrix Potter dedicated this story to "all Pickles - especially to those that get upon my garden wall".
